I'll Sleep When it's Done
I am from droopy eyes
and late-night snacks;
from long ago
good-nights and
“I’ve got to get this done.”
I am from my mother’s tired voice:
“when are you going to bed?”
followed by
“I’ll sleep when it’s done.”
From midnight Algebra notes
and 1:00 a.m writing sessions.
I am from doing whatever it takes:
no sleep,
no lunch,
no more patience.
Where I am from there’s always more;
more work; more headaches;
more time for me to shut my eyes
and drift into oblivion later.
I’ve got to finish.
Twenty minutes,
forty-five,
an hour.
I’m from
“just a few more minutes,”
and
“I’ll sleep when it’s done.”
Statement of Purpose:
During revision of this piece, I worked on improving the flow of the poem through word choice.
