Gatsby Film Review
The film The Great Gatsby was fantastical. The wild parties with giant champagne bottles full of confetti and girls coated in sequins galavanting around the dance floor with men in tuxes created an atmosphere that was almost magic. But this also carried over to after the party as well. Every scene was dripping with impossible glamour captivating the viewer for the entire movie, letting you become an affluent member of twenties society for 142 minutes, experiencing the glitz and spectacularity that ruled the decade.
The plot runs together well, there are several storylines in the book and it is well translated into the movie. This movie is the sixth reincarnation of the book, The Great Gatsby, in film form; quite a challenge to not only live up to the former movies but be better than the them and leave a new and improved Gatsby legacy. I think that the director, Baz Luhrmann, did a fantastic job of making this version of the movie an entirely independent Gatsby, meaning that he really differentiated it to leave that new and improved legacy. He did this by making it modern and giving it a fresh twist: hip-hop.
The Jazz Age received its name from the cutting edge music that rocked the decade. In order to recreate the cutting edge feeling that readers experienced when The Great Gatsby was first published, Luhrmann used the cutting-edge music of our time, Hip-hop. The soundtrack to this movie was the best part, it contributed to the modern feeling of a vintage story. Another important factor that contributed to the modern feeling of the film was the fashion. Daisy’s fashion especially added to this feeling with her ruffled gowns and bob haircut -- fashionable now and then. My favorites of her outfits included the dress she is wearing when we first meet her and the gown she wears to the party she attends with her husband, Tom.
Statement of Purpose: During the revision process I focused on Word Choice. I also focused on sentence fluency.
