Gustav Teichman
Someone is here today,
visiting.
She always worried about that:
“We have no one, who will visit us when we are gone?”
she inquired, the lines on her forehead tightening.
“They will come,”
I assured her.
Today though,
is different, as
she is not just passing by.
This is the one,
the one who will
learn our story.
I told her of my love,
my life,
the one I shall share eternity with.
I told her of
that damn baby.
I told my story,
not in words but
in thoughts and feelings,
through God
I shared my story with this
stranger.
I would have never shared this alive.
I told her how God didn’t want us to have children;
he just wanted us to love each other.
That I could do, but wasn’t enough to please her, not at first.
That damn baby.
The one that almost ruined us.
The one that caused screeching, howling, and agony.
The one that ripped and slashed my heart with guilt.
All she ever wanted, besides me.
We eventually got through, she realized how
lucky
we already were and accepted that
no one can have everything.
Life taught me something:
Even in its abridged duration
God has a plan.
He had a plan for us
to love,
to live,
to die.
Statement of Purpose: In revising this poem I focused on eliminating wordiness. I also focused on organization.
